Announcing the stARTup SF 2020 Selection Committee

stARTup gathers a prestigious Selection Committee of curators, artists, and dealers for each fair to ensure that every event is fresh and exciting for people looking to discover new and emerging talent.

This jury brings local celebrity, global perspective, and expert experience to the review. We're honored to have them participate and can't wait to announce our latest exhibitors at our 6th edition of stARTup SF. Applications deadline is February 9.


rene de guzman, oakland

René de Guzman is the Director of Exhibition Strategy and Senior Curator of Art at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA). Before joining OMCA in 2007, de Guzman was Director of Visual Arts at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, a contemporary art center in San Francisco. Past exhibitions include Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Dan Clowes, Question Bridge: Black Males, All Power to the People: Black Panthers at 50, and RESPECT: Hip-Hop Style and Wisdom, among others.


RODNEY EWING, SAN FRANCISCO

Rodney Ewing’s drawings, installations, and mixed media works focus on his need to intersect body and place, memory and fact to re-examine human histories, cultural conditions, and events. With his work he is pursuing a narrative that requires us to be present and intimate. His work has been exhibited at Euphrat Museum of Art, Cupertino, CA; The Drawing Center, New York, NY; and in San Francisco, CA at Root Division, Jack Fischer Gallery, San Francisco Art Commission Gallery, Nancy Toomey Fine Art, Alter Space Gallery, and Ictus Projects. He has been an Artist-in-Residence at Recology and the De Young Museum of Fine Arts both in San Francisco, as well as Djerassi in Woodside, California. Ewing received his BFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University and his MFA in Printmaking from West Virginia University.


danielle fox, oakland

Danielle Fox has over twenty years of experience as an art historian (PhD, Northwestern University), writer, editor, independent curator, Deputy Director of Business Development at Sothebys in London, and communications and project manager for Artakt consulting in London. She brings an understanding of the international art market; experience working with galleries, auction houses, and private clients; and five years working in the interior design field, which gives her a special understanding of the important role that art often plays in broader architectural and design programs. Danielle founded SLATE Contemporary Gallery in Oakland California in 2009, and SLATE Art Consulting with Shelley Barry in 2013. In addition to overseeing operations for both companies, she personally manages projects for several of SLATE’s most important clients (including private collectors and property developers) helping them to build collections through acquisition and commissioning of special works of art. In addition to her work with SLATE, she is an active member of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association, Art Table, International Interior Design Association, and Oakland Art Murmur’s Advisory Council.


Carrie Lederer, Oakland

Carrie Lederer is an artist and independent curator. Recently retired after serving 25 years as Curator of Exhibitions and Programs at the Bedford Center in Walnut Creek, California, Lederer help create a nationally acclaimed exhibition program and made the Bedford into one of the premier venues to experience engaging and high quality art in the greater Bay Area.

As an artist, Carrie has exhibited her nature-inspired work across the United States. She has completed commissions for UCSF Medical Center, Facebook, Art Source and private collections. Lederer is a recipient of the prestigious Fleishhacker Foundation Eureka Award, and her artwork has been reviewed in publications including ArtNews, San Francisco Chronicle, ArtWeek, San Jose Mercury News, Art Issues Magazine, and Diablo Magazine.


michelle nye, san francisco

Michelle Nye is the Interim Director at the SFMOMA Artists Gallery, where she has worked supporting Bay Area artists since 2001. Previously she received her Bachelors of Art at the University of California, Santa Cruz, University of Bologna, Italy and l’Academia degli Belli Arte in Bologna, Italy. As a curator, she has organized public exhibitions and as an artist she has practiced photography, painting and poetry, exhibiting and selling throughout the Bay Area. She serves on the advisory councils of Kala Art Institute, Sensoree and Rhythmix Cultural Works.

Andrew Rafacz is a leading contemporary art gallery based in Chicago. Founded in 2008, the gallery has presented—often for the first time in Chicago—prescient exhibitions by an international roster of artists for more than a decade. The gallery represents artists from a wide spectrum of backgrounds and identities working in many mediums, connected by their respective dedication to a thoughtful, defining practice.
