How to Apply

stARTup Art Fair is a juried fair. You may apply by clicking any of the live links listed at the side.

Artists selected by the jury will create an exhibition of their work in a room for all three days of the fair. Your application should include:

  • Artist resume / CV

  • 10 images (20 images if you apply with another artist)

  • Short statement describing your body of work and how it will integrate into the space

What We Provide

The fair is not only an opportunity to make sales but more importantly, to expand your professional network through exposure to the many curators, art consultants, gallerists and collectors who come to stARTup.

Exhibitor Fees include:

  • 4 nights at the hotel (Thurs, Jan 24 through Mon, Jan 28)

  • Complimentary parking

  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

  • A personal artist page on the stARTup website 

  • All advertising, marketing and promotion

  • Public liability insurance

  • Private security through the duration of the exhibition

  • Curatorial and professional development support in the weeks before and after the fair

  • Opportunity to be featured with our online partner, Artfinder. 

 

How the Fair Works

Exhibitors can begin installing their exhibitions at 3pm on Thursday before the fair. We recommend using 3M Command nailess hangers to install artwork as exhibitors will be charged for any damage to the walls. Hotel art will be removed by the staff prior to the fair, furniture can be rearranged as needed, but cannot be removed from the rooms. Your room must be returned to its original condition before checking out at the end the weekend.

Exhibitors must have their rooms open and available to attendees during all fair hours. Rooms must be manned by the exhibitor or an assistant at all times.

Fair hours are typically:

Friday, 12–10pm
Saturday, 12–9pm
Sunday, 12–7pm

Break down begins on Sunday at 7pm when the fair closes. Check out time is noon Monday.

 

What to Expect

We get between 4,000-5,000 visitors over the course of the 3 days. Most of our attendees come to buy art from newly discovered, under-recognized  artists. We also enjoy attendance by gallerists, curators, art consultants, and interior designers looking for unique work and new artist relationships. Although 80% of the artists make sales, the real value of stARTup fairs are the invaluable art world and professional connections you can make that will continue to produce dividends in the weeks and months after the event. Focus on sales for sure, but also use this weekend to make appointments with past collectors, invite art professionals to see your exhibition, greet each person who enters, be available for all opportunities.

Exhibitor fees

  • stARTup LA and stARTup SF start at $2000

  • stARTup Small Works start at $500

stARTup's cost per square foot are among the lowest of all artists fairs, and unlike the others, we do not take a commission of sales. Artists keep 100% of the sales from their work at the fair.

 

Strategies for Affording the Fair

Artists may share a room with 1-2 other artists to split costs. Artist groups must apply with one application as mentioned above.

Crowdfunding campaigns and "studio sales weekends" are other good options. Some artists have had their fees underwritten by friends, family, and/or collectors in exchange for artwork.
