Shadows n Reflections is part of the Vietnam through the Lens series, where the photographer returned to her home country after 30 years to document the physical and cultural changes that have taken place after the civil war. The images document the harvesting of salt in Central Vietnam. Before dawn the farmers arrive at the field well covered in their colorful garbs, rubber boots and gloves, cone hat and cotton gauze mask. They gracefully transport the salt in the scale-shape rattan baskets held together by a bamboo bar. At early morning the water distorts their laborious movements into graceful, sometimes abstract reflections. At mid-morning, the sun casts their shadows onto the shallow water, exaggerating their cone hats and round baskets into larger than life figures. These images also highlight Vietnam’s industrious culture and illustrate the beauty of the people’s hard work.
