Joanna A Beckett

I intend to present two seemingly different collections: non-representational paintings that capture our internal world, and paintings that deconstruct specific elements taken from our external reality.

My abstract work is a juxtaposition of two worlds: psychology and art. As a trained psychologist, my understanding of the human condition is based upon both my personal experiences and professional knowledge; one does not exist without the other in my case. My perception of the world and my approach to the creative process will always be influenced by both. My paintings attempt to capture our inner experiences — effective states, moods, hopes and beliefs - as well as evoke emotional engagement. They often depict my own reflections on humanity, meaning and values, and as such invite viewers to pause and allow for their own interpretations to emerge in their minds.

My second collection is predominantly inspired by my travels around Europe, India, Indonesia, Cuba, Japan, and Australia and depicts realism in a fresh and modern way. My intention is not to reproduce or illustrate reality in a naturalistic manner — or idealise it — but deconstruct and simplify it, and add ‘an edge’ by deliberate avoidance of details and perfection. On a personal level, it is important to me to remain authentic to self, to create art with a sense of dignity, and to engage with a creative process that is raw and liberating.
