Lucy Traeger

Painting allows me to explore the vulnerability of being human. Through the constant connectivity of our modern lives we are inundated with images. Traditional media depicts war, disaster, famine, while social media allows our loved ones to present an idealized version of their lives and the people in them. Seemingly unrelated, they both evoke an emotional response and suggest a larger narrative, begging for further investigation.

Each of the paintings I have submitted depicts a precarious situation, some more obviously so than others. Through painting I am able to empathize with my subjects and their circumstances. Be it a child in a situation curated by his parents or an adult faced with tragedy, the same sense of helplessness prevails.

As I translate these photos through painting, they take on new meaning. Whether painting images of world events or people going about their everyday lives, the subjects begin to reveal their humanity and become vulnerable.
