Miriam Hitchcock

My work exists as a personal testament to living. The dense cultural milieu, visceral phenomena, and observable forms all determine formal choices with parity, and are manifest in mixed media painting, works on paper and stop motion animation, which in addition, pays homage to specific poetic texts.

Through improvisational handling of materials, compositions emerge, containing imagery that often precedes my understanding of it. Representational elements conspire with abstraction in images that intentionally deploy disruption, fragmentation and juxtaposition. The resulting coincidence and anachronism alludes to the familiar mystery of existing in time and the sensation of holding remembered experience, each of us a living vessel of memory. Reference to suburban life and the habitat we construct against a diminishing wilderness permeate the work.
