Todd Dunning

stARTup Art Fair is the public debut of Todd Dunning's Roto animated sculptures. Self-determining, a Roto sculpture thinks on its own — deciding how to react to its environment. They move endlessly and silently without moving parts, and never the same way twice. Watching them undulate and explore their own space has been described as a "hypnotizing, transcendent experience" totally new to the art world.

The artistic goal of the series is — for the first time — to replace sculptural form with movement. Artist Todd Dunning took 4 years to develop their sophisticated behaviors and engineering. "The physical sculpture's form is unimportant", says Dunning. "It's a living being, not a static object the artist made. Just like ourselves, it is what it chooses to do independently. The sculpture controls its own world and communicates its own message, not the artist. I'm continually amazed by what the pieces express once they're alive. Self-contained and lightweight, they are both durable and as easy to install as a mobile. They are hand-built by the artist with aerospace materials including carbon fiber, microprocessors and dielectric elastomers.
