Andy Muonio

Currently my work concentrates on nonrepresentational abstract forms of pure color relationships taken from memories of places. As I travel more internationally, I am amazed at the different color space of individual locations. Recently, I was above the Arctic Circle and witnessed the midnight sun on an overcast sea. This very alien light, with its subdued complexity, helped inspire this series of works. You can see a clear connection to the artist Mark Rothko, but I am also inspired from years of teaching color theory and painting “plein-air” landscapes. I begin these works by creating color studies digitally with an application and a stylus that mimics painting; I then let them evolve as I carefully craft an acrylic painting on canvas.
