Sean Lim

For years, my love for textile craft lead me to explore various techniques of manipulating traditional materials like bandages, leather, cloth, yarn, and rope — searching for modern takes on techniques like quilting, knitting, and macrame. For my current work, I wanted to find other common materials and, at the same time, utilize re-used and rescued components. This literally led me to think outside “the box,” and I began cutting and shaping corrugated cardboard. My love for detail inspired me to layer the materials in sculptural and other three-dimensional ways, and the incorporation of textile-related materials followed as a natural added step. The play with repetition of pattern is a signature in my visual vocabulary that carries over from my fashion designs, and is a motif that infuses the aesthetics of my current pieces.
